MALCOLM X
Malcolm Little was born may 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. He changed his name to Malcolm X in 1952 because he believed little was his slave name and "X" represented his ancestors lost last name. His mother name was Louis Norton Little. Malcolm's fathers name was Earl Little, he was an baptist minister and supported the black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. Earl being involved in civil rights movement cause white supremacist organization to harass Earl and his family forcing them to move twice before Malcolm's fourth birthday.
INVOLVEMENT IN THE NATION OF ISLAM
Malcolm was introduced to the Nation Of Islam by his brother Reginald while he was incarcerated. Reginald would visit his brother while he was in prison for burglary charges. He was sentenced to ten years but would only serve seven of them and was granted parole. Malcolm still incarcerated started studying the teaching of Elijah Muhammad. Muhammad thought that white society actively worked to keep African-Americans from being successful. The (NOI) had many goals one of them was to have their own state. Malcolm X became a devoted follower when he was released of parole in 1952. Malcolm was appointed to the head spokes man of the (NOI). Muhammad also sent him to establish new mosques in other cities such as Detroit, Michigan, and Harlem to convert African-Americans to the Muslim religion. He also told the (NOI) messages through television , news paper, and radio. He was also given credit for bringing the (NOI) from 500 in the 1952 to 30,000 in 1963.
